Iraq War Internet Performance Reports...
Keynote will provide here a regular ‘Iraq War Internet Performance Report’ for the duration of the crisis that provides data and analysis regarding the performance of major Internet backbones and important government, commercial, media and anti-war Web sites. With Americans and much of the world increasingly relying on the Internet as a vital communications link, and heightened concerns about cyber-terrorism, Keynote is making its data and analysis available both on its Web site home page at www.keynote.com on behalf of the Internet-using public, and directly to media via e-mail at approximately 10:00 AM EST each day a report is issued.
... Unsure how neutral this data is going to be...but interesting nevertheless...

A human clone has all the rights and privileges that accompany this legal and moral status. 3. A human clone is to be accorded the dignity and respect due any member of our species.

Marines go to the Web, select pixel pattern for new fatigues
The Marines Corps went high-tech in its design for new camouflage fatigues. The uniforms, which will be ready for Marines to buy by the end of the year, were designed by computer and feature a pixel pattern that resembles computer chips. An Internet poll of Marines helped determine which pattern to use out of more than 100 proposed designs. “A lot of teamwork went into this combat utilities program,” said Capt. Burrell Parmer, a spokesman for Marine Corps Systems Command in Quantico, Va. “It was for Marines and decided by Marines.”

With bags full of new Chris Clark material ready for release and many a live show planned, it is now time for the 'Chris Clark Visual Loop Experiment'. These tracks are taken from the forthcoming Chris Clark EP "Ceramics is the Bomb" out in May 2003. We want all different styles so there are no limitations to the method and format - mini dv footage, shockwave, super-8, flash,, whatever.. However, we want to compile everything to mini dv to project from at the shows, so all computer animation pieces (shockwave, flash, etc) need to be recorded and sent in as video files (.MOV / .AVI etc) The deadline to get the pieces in is Monday 21st April 2003. So that only gives around five weeks.. but we only want 20 seconds! Here's a summary of the project: - The loops should be a minimum of 20 seconds and no longer than 40. - All pieces should be sent in as Quicktime DV Pal (.mov) or Microsoft DV (.avi) 720 x 576 pixles, 25 fps. - We have set a deadline as the time when we will compile the work for the live shows, please try to get it in before then.

It may be surprising to imagine the relationship of a blueprint to the worlds of art and science, but the image is based on a mathematical number sequence inspired by Leonardo Fibonacci, a 13th Century mathematician, and the design forms spirals, a labyrinth, a sunflower, and a magnetic field. The Fibonacci Sequence seems to have relevance to patterns that are at the core of all living things. "The Fibonacci Sequence relates to the growth pattern in nature as well as in children," says Heidi Lippman, the artist who designed the 4,000-foot Terrazzo floor for the Imagination Stage, formerly known as the Bethesda Academy of the Performing Arts.

Swarm Simulation (Video) - Frank Schweitzer.... "Moving Swarm with Harmonic Interactions" ...It worries me that this is possibly the sexiest sentence I've heard in a while..I don't know much about you, Dr Frank, but you certainly know the right buttons to press... Seriously..I think I've found my site of the week... Swarms of Particle Agents with Harmonic Interactions
Agent-based modeling is a powerful methodology to describe the occurence of complex behavior in biological systems. The interaction of a large number of individuals (agents) may for example lead to the emergence of new forms of collective motion. In this paper, we investigate a particle-based approach to the coherent motion of a swarm with parabolic (i.e. harmonic) interactions between the agents. It is based on generalized Langevin equations for the particle agents, which take into account (i) energetic conditions for active motion, (ii) linear attractive forces between each two agents. The complex collective motion observed can be explained as the result of these different influences: the active motion of the agents, which is driven by the energy-take up, would eventually lead to a spatial dispersion of the swarm, while the mutual interaction of the agents results in a tendency of spatial concentration. In addition to particle-based computer simulations, we also provide a mathematical framework for investigating the collective dynamics.

On the Backs of Ants
When an agent happened on a node, it began to produce one of two simulated chemical trails at a rate that decreased in time. The strength of the chemical trail also faded as time went by. The key to the self-assembling network is that the agents are drawn to the chemical trails laid down by other agents. The researchers’ model contains two types of network nodes—blue and red. Each agent starts out as a green agent, which lays down no chemical trails and travels randomly. When an agent happens on a blue node, it turns blue, and when an agent happens across a red node, it turns red. Red and blue agents lay down chemical trails that attract agents of the opposite color. Over time the model changes from many green agents traveling randomly to colored agents moving among nodes like traffic in a network. “You see a network that connects almost all neighboring nodes,” said Schweitzer. The chemical method simultaneously solves the two basic problems of network self-assembly—detecting nodes and establishing links between nodes, Schweitzer said. This type of network quickly addresses failures and disturbances, said Schweitzer. “If the position of the nodes is changed, the network adjusts accordingly. If a link is broken, it will be restored very fast.”

Like Dixons, Argos claims that it will be reconsidering the future of GameCube after this stock clearance, and will make a decision based on the demand for the console at that time. "Sales have been slow so we wanted to speed these up by selling it at a good price," according to Argos marketing director Paul Geddes. "In terms of what happens after that, we haven't yet taken a decision on the format."

"As of version 52, Processing now supports alpha (transparency) and antialiasing (smooth edges). I've posted an example here: http://www.groupc.net/2003/alpha/ smooth() and noSmooth() turns antialiasing on and off. a fourth value to fill() sets the transparency level. each vertex can be a different color and different level of transparency. There are still some issues, but not for long. A big round of applause for Mr. Ben Fry. (Antialiasing is currently only for polygons)

Small correction to mention of a Flash GoL speed previously; the flash version I did runs at 30 x 30 so that's more like 900 mcs being turned on & off. A few months after I completed this Were-Here had an Flash optimsation mini-competition with entries from some the strongest AS coders around. That generated some excellent speeds for a basic GoL - far more creative code & algorithm than my effort but still many orders of magnitude slower than P5 doing a similar task...even more so if you include time spent creating/coding in that "doing"...

Mattel stops making the toy, but denies that the unintended value-add is the reason. Says a spokesperson: "It's just not a continued product in our line."

...has impressed me no end...It's a wonderful little environment to try things out in, with the bonus of being able to delve into full JAVA if required... I mentioned the speed yesterday but just to elaborate further, there has been a lot of apps I've wanted to develop in Flash that were simply out of the question due to its extremely slow processing. For example, the Flash Game Of Life I developed was limited to a grid of around 15 by 15 which isn't really enough room to see the larger behavior of the system. It actually took a lot of optimization to get it to work acceptably even with those few cells, time far better spent being creative & moving forward. In P5 , there is an example GoL that despite being non-optimized works on a grid of 300x300 at 24fps or so...That's 90,000 cells compared to 225 ....(The irony that Flash is on ver 6 and P5 is still in Alpha isn't lost on me...)... I'm not putting P5 forward as replacement for Flash for general use - P5 isn't aimed there - but if you find Flash frustrating & limited then P5 is definitely something to look into... Time to dig out my O'Reilley JAVA in a Nutshell...

Processing 1.0 _ALPHA_
Processing is a context for exploring the emerging conceptual space enabled by electronic media. It is an environment for learning the fundamentals of computer programming within the context of the electronic arts and it is an electronic sketchbook for developing ideas. The software is currently in a pre-release stage, but bug fixes are being made as we head toward a more complete "1.0" release. Processing will be free to download and available for Mac, PC, and Linux. Processing is an open project initiated by Ben Fry and Casey Reas. It is currently developed in the Aesthetics and Computation Group at the MIT Media Lab and at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea.
Just been checking this out and am very impressed with the speed. Flash can be such a slow language when processing & displaying, it's been a real limiter...

generative art rambles
one last thought before I consign this to the net: the rise and fall of bedroom coding. as someone who grew up with BASIC and ZX Spectrums, I feel very lucky to have fallen in a sweet spot time-wise. people 5 years older than me had to tackle tiny, useless computers with no useful programming tools or compilers. people learning to program now have to deal with 500 lines of directx code just to put a pixel on the screen, and must learn .NET and lengthy APIs just to get started. perhaps the small beauty of the net languages like php, java will (are currently?) revive the bedroom coding "industry" by reducing todays over-complex home machines to a managable size.
Amen...I mentioned on the Gibson board this morning the joy of low-level programming. I too come from that "sweet time-spot". Nowadays the numourous levels of abstraction & API layers that have acrued over the years really get in the way...Nothing really beats the sheer accessability of those old home computers with their BASIC roms, switch on & go, like a pen & pad, you knew where you were with PLOT x,y ...The Spectrum was knowable... The Flash of it's day... The look of my old Alife site, G3RM.ORG, was a homage to the Spectrum; although not many people picked up on it...I did tone that down in the final version (I was originally using the ZX Spectrum font etc..); wish I hadn't really..alas, G3RM.ORG is no-more; domain-napped....(*note to self, upload it here..)..

Microsoft's big PC plans - News for PC at GameSpot
As has been rumored, Longhorn will likely include a major overhaul in Window's visual presentation, which may include 3D interface elements. Lester also said it would include a special "My Games" view that would centralize all the matchmaking, control panel settings, patching tools, and game lists and make such tasks much simpler. Microsoft is working on streamlining a number of current technical trouble areas, like the installation process and display drivers, and will centralize game updates through a Windows Update-like patch server. It's also looking into making it possible to run Windows games directly from the CD without installation. Somewhat more straightforward features include adding sophisticated matchmaking into Microsoft Messenger and parental controls over which users can play certain games.

For more than 50 years the Soviet Union hid them in museum basements and secret repositories, one reportedly in a monastery wall. They are thousands of paintings, archives and rare books looted by Soviet forces in Germany and Eastern Europe during and after World War II and taken to Russia as so-called trophy art. (Now the preferred term in Russia is "displaced cultural treasures.") Hitler's forces had previously pillaged many of the works from Jewish owners and other Nazi victims.

Windows User Interface Guidelines...from MS (no sniggering at the back please...)
User experience and interface design in the context of creating software represents an approach that puts the user, rather than the system, at the center of the process. This philosophy, called user-centered design, incorporates user concerns and advocacy from the beginning of the design process and dictates the needs of the user should be foremost in any design decisions.
I'm actually rather fond of MS in some ways...but UIs are not their strongpoint.....

Measuring Folding@Home's performance impact

Google would like to request your help on Google Compute, a new feature for the Google Toolbar. By turning on this feature, you allow your computer to work on complex problems when it would otherwise be idle. The work it does is automatically sent via the Internet to researchers who combine it with information sent by thousands of other users. The first beneficiary of this effort is Folding@home, a non-profit research project at Stanford University that is trying to understand the structure of proteins so they can develop better treatments for a number of illnesses. In the future Google Compute may allow you to donate your computing time to other worthwhile endeavors, including projects to improve Google and its services. The Google Compute feature of the Google Toolbar shouldn't affect your regular computing activities and you can easily disable it at any time for any reason.

Nag-O-Matic ..Captology is the science of using technology to modify behavior. Sounds scary -- but it's better than the alternatives.
Fogg's research shows that people who do something well do it even better when they're being watched -- and conversely, if they do something poorly, they do even worse if someone is looking. That's why programs like Weight Watchers are effective; they encourage record-keeping to make us monitor ourselves. Technology simply takes this idea to the next level.

New Macromedia site... We'll see how usable this turns out to be in coming months as I use the site at least once a week. That's the only way really to judge something like this... Visually it's ok-ish...big ish; we're not talking cutting edge visuals or even near trendy design, so feels a little too conservative for me..As it's a showcase site with a wide audience, that approach is understandable & I guess the only sensible route...but it's still a little dissapointing... respectable selection of articles chronicling the design & implementation process...

Apple music service forthcoming?... Interesting to note how Apple are spinning this as a huge development; the majors annouced their own similar system last week...Even technically, with the limited info available, this doesn't seem revolutionary. AAC instead of MP3 at 99c a song doesn't appear that brilliant a deal...we *know* the interface will be great but is that enough?...

Dear YayHooray- We've got some bad news. Without going into the really frustrating details of it all... due to some MAJOR server complications that we were developing YayHooray v3 on... We've lost everything. The sucker is fried. This comes as a GREAT loss and extreme disappointment to Jacob and I because we've spent the last 4 weeks or so without sleep putting this together for you all, and we had some REALLY exciting things in store. We're feeling pretty discouraged, and need to take a small break. In that time YayHooray, in any form, will be down while we figure out what to do. We're really sorry. :( Sincerely, Jake Please show your support Share with us your feelings on the situation. We will be using the responses we collect here in a future project. .... hehe...check the YH fools Thread...suckered me... Welcome back, YayHooray - one of the best design communities out there...

Free museums attract 'the better off'... No real surprise here as the admission price was never an issue; it's the periphery that tends to make museum visits expensive. The movement towards free entry supported by surrounding facilities (cafes, bars, museum shops & merchandise) is only making this worse...
