http://www.insects.gatech.edu/ Location: Atlanta, Georgia, USA; December 15-17, 2003. This workshop is a follow on to the highly successful inter-disciplinary workshop at Cambridge organized by David Sumpter in December 2001. We hope to attract a similar group of biologists, mathematicians, engineers, and computer scientists to share ideas about mathematical and algorithmic models of social insect behavior. The objective is a cross-flow of ideas: 1) How can mathematical and algorithmic models of insect behavior inspire solutions to problems in computing, planning, and logistics? and 2) How can methodologies and techniques from computing and engineering be applied to the problem of building such models in the first place?

Latest issue (March 2003) has a snooty review of Aphexs new remix album "26 Mixes for Cash"...An interesting read but I get the impression the reviewer wanted to write a negative review in spite of his obvious love of the music.."flippant, artless chancer" - that's just stupidly harsh & way off the mark...

Caltech, Italian Scientists Find Human Longevity Marker
In a study of nonrelated people who have lived for a century or more, the researchers found that the centenarians had something in common: each was five times more likely than the general population to have the same mutation in their mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). That mutation, the researchers suggest, may provide a survival advantage by speeding mtDNA replication, thereby increasing its amount or replacing that portion of mtDNA which has been battered by the ravages of aging.

Brian's Buzz | Newsletter - XP Passwords..rendered useless... "Reader Tony DeMartino alerted me to the problem, which all administrators of Windows XP machines should immediately take to heart: Anyone with a Windows 2000 CD can boot up a Windows XP box and start the Windows 2000 Recovery Console, a troubleshooting program. Windows XP then allows the visitor to operate as Administrator without a password, even if the Administrator account has a strong password. The visitor can also operate in any of the other user accounts that may be present on the XP machine, even if those accounts have passwords. Unbelievably, the visitor can copy files from the hard disk to a floppy disk or other removable media - something even an Administrator is normally prevented from doing when using the Recovery Console." ... Quoted here as I need to get access to Caroles new laptop to network it to our other machines & internet but her work IT guys won't give me the admin password. Her user is so locked down it's just impossible to achieve anything... I can understand their reluctance as I'm always a bit dubious when people ask me to do similar at work but I'm hardly a weekend tinkerer, I'm gonna so hate myself if I have to bring up the fact that I started working in IT the same year they were born... Anyway this could get me out of this fix & at least let me do something on the machine; it so pisses me off to see such a sexy machine in such an impotent slumber...stay tuned...

How to Solve Image Problems in Flash Since its old versions, Macromedia Flash users have had to deal with this program's nasty bitmap problems. A new version has been released now, and its image displaying API seems unchanged - same problems, same results, the same tricks needed. Because of this, and because I'm tired of seeing people complaining about certain bitmap shifting problems and using nasty/real bad solutions while there's a much better and cleaner one, here's a fast guide on what kind of problems Flash has with bitmap images and how to solve them. ...

WARP RECORDS | MEAM | DVD | SKA019 ... "Skam's debut DVD release : This is the long awaited audio/visual project from MEAM, the 3 member collective that includes the reputed visual artist Michael England. In their original BUBBLE incarnation, and now as MEAM, they supplied the beautiful visuals seen at Skam events worldwide, including London NESH 2001 and The Lighthouse Party in 2000; the 24 minute long DVD contains some elements previewed at these events. The CD/Vinyl is nearly 30 minutes long, and the music definitely stands up to the high quality of Skam's current output - comparable to the best of Team Doyobi, Quinoline and Freeform." ...

..was the Quentin & Philip : A Double Portait by Andrew Barrow...It's a cliche but there's still nothing on-line that compares with browsing a decently stocked bookshop... One of the oldest bookshops/stationers/artshops in town, Clerks of Chelmsford. is closing down & it was so tragic to wander in yesterday to see the "Everything at 50% / Cash only" notices up & slightly dazed crowd picking though the remains of the stock. The atmosphere inside bordered on tearful, I think people were kinda shocked to see it in such a state;. No real surpise, it hadn't changed a jot in the 25yrs I've been using it and it did always feel like only sheer force of tradition kept the place alive - it never played up to that the way some of the smarter (I guess) family stores have...very sad... Somehow in the weird mishmash piles I found How The Leopard Chaged It Spots: The Evolution of Complexity by Brian Goodwin which was worth the 12p for the title alone..(yes 12 P...I felt strangly GUILTY buying something that cheap..)..and Evolution Isn't What It Used to Be by Walter Truett Anderson...the bookpiles are still growing... I'm kicking myself now for not picking up some 1/2 price Moleskine notebooks... bugger!...(Grest product/Bad Name award; bloody difficult to enquire about...)... 34..Hope my sister gets the card I sent yesterday, having to write my old address always weirds me out a little. I always hated having to tell someone my address on the phone as a kid; it was sooo long-winded. I suspect my infant mind choked on the "Al-An-Dor" bit without being aware of it's full horror...I so wanted to be a number..:)...

Celestia: A 3D Space Simulator" Celestia is a free real-time space simulation that lets you experience our universe in three dimensions. Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. All travel in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit."...

Delia Derbyshire (deliaderbyshire.org) Delia Derbyshire was born in Coventry, England, in 1937. Educated at Coventry Grammar School and Girton College, Cambridge, where she was awarded a degree in mathematics and music. In 1959, on approaching Decca records, Delia was told that the company DID NOT employ women in their recording studios, so she went to work for the UN in Geneva before returning to London to work for music publishers Boosey & Hawkes..... She, of course, later went onto to create the classic DR WHO theme...amongst other proto-techno gems.... Another unremembered nodal point in music...Theres a film to made here...

Ftrain: Getting Close to the Machine..a piece about Ellen Ullman's great book Close to the Machine...I wonder how I'd forgotten I'd read it as it was a very firm favourite at the time (97ish..).....Not many books really capture what it's like to CODE & how that focused mindset manifests itself outside the machine... Gotta check out the new one...

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom...read this yesterday & loved it, great fun and much more than the sum of it's influences, although they are easy to spot... Downloadable as well (in every format imaginable); I went retro and printed it on the Laser Jet at work... Relevant quote from the Gibson transcript I posted earlier..." Q) Do you have any particular concerns over much of your work (novels included) being posted on the internet, bypassing traditional means of publishing (and also your means to maintain an income?) I look at that as an involuntary tax on success. Really, that doesn't happen to you unless you're doing very well indeed, and constitute a brand in your own right."....
