It probably caught yours as well. It’s not too often I get to write about serious issues, so you’ll be seeing the bank article next week. ..bought her first laptop home last night...a SONY VAIO....not top spec but more than enough great design, looks & tech to make me sweat... As a kid I wanted to work for SONY - it was something about the logo I think; SONY always read as shorthand for "THE PHUTURE" ...Wish I'd persued that dream but to geek kid stuck in rural Essex, SONY existed in some other "modern" world; a layer impregnable to the "likes of me"..(hehe...the UK class system was obvious even as a small child. I so hope that tatty truth has dminished for kids today...) ... Still have a HiFi Amplfiier/Radio combo by them; some weird SONY seperates oddbod; Genuine wood-ended unit with faux brushed-aluminium facing; an aesthetic from the depths of design hell...but it still works after all these years...,perfectly.... and it's got the LOGO..always the LOGO...

We have created a number of tools that make filtering and publicizing both easy and effective in other domains. The application of those tools to new music could change the musical landscape. "....

I've always suspected that the credit-card was the ideal form for portable data..small enough to transport easily, whilst large enough to handle easily...anything smaller, I think, would just feel wrong to most people...(Minidiscs, the audio kind, I think suffer from this..).. Whether this will be able to stand up to everyday use remains to be seen..it does sound like the tech is really an isotype of Floppy Discs which were never 100% reliable...Not as sexy as solid-state but if it works, they hell, why not?...

has transformed my film watching again. I'm such a sucker for Additional Commentaries, they alone make DVDs a no-brainrer for me, but I'm no fan of DVD playback on our previous setup, a computer monitor. So a lot of the discs I've amassed over the past few months have only been half-watched at best, but now I can view them on the TV (with remote control etc..) and the oh-so-important Sofa I'm turning into a film junkie again... The SO has suggested I have OCD tendancies as she sees me watching the same film multiple times....but there's nothing obsessive about fully an exploring an artwork to my mind....

TASCHEN: Books...when it comes to Art books, this publisher leads the way...not only are the books always beautifully produced, with wonderfully accurate reproductions, but they seldom break the bank...I'm lucky as our local book remainder store sells them off at less than half-price, even less thanks to the traditional post-xmas sales.... Latest purchase is ART of the 20th Century.. more or less an encyclopedia, it certainly weighs like one...

...the big benefit of getting up at 3-4am in the morning is having News24 as ambient backing....Suprised to see the DeCSS case getting an item on there this morning; pity it's such a short piece, practically just a headline, and so little of the background & issues this raises get a mention (part from, of course, the "movie industy" being up-in arms about it...)....

EducationGuardian.co.uk | Schools | A third of teachers plan to quit..to do what exactly?? ... I work in Eucation and I hear moaning from the lecuturers almost daily...Speaking to a guy yesterday he was telling me the basic is £14 (~$25) an hour; which ain't that bad, considering the extended holidays etc.... Galls even more as us lowly support staff earn far, far below that, yet are expected to be as deciated, profesional etc...I even spend a lot of my time training em, doesn;t that make me a teacher myself??.. Don't get me wrong, I'm sympathtic to the way the Govt has treated FE over the last few years but it's 2003, we live time where everyone struggles...

Goodbye, Columbus!..NYT on Gavin Menzies, a popular if somewhat dodgy historian...1421 wants to be another Longitude or FMT but the beauty of those books were they came out of no-where, initially selling themselves using standard publicity, good reviews & word of mouth ; all the marketing behind 1421 feels a little too pushy to me...I don't feel a book gets anything positive out of being so hardshly marketed.. But I haven't read the book though so we shall see....

Good.
The BBC always got a lot of things right with Science & Tech programs, gems like The Sky At Night, Horizon & QED were the proto-geek mindfood of choice as I was growing up. But Tommorrows World was like the runt of the pack, made sense in the 70s, wobbled in the 80s & then tumbled into dumb-land in the last decade...
Sadly they intend to keep the name & "will create a number of new programmes under the Tomorrow's World brand name over the coming year. "...note the use of the singlar "year"..

... ?
Po Bronson, I doubt I'll be getting What Should I Do With My Life?...it looks just a bit too self-helpy for my liking; doesnt realy seem in keeping with his previous work....

BBC reports....at least, this'll make it harder for them to dodge the much needed DNA tests. It appears the first one is tied up in legal issues in the US hence no test yet....
