... ? 'St. Sebastian', study for a stone carving by Eric Gill 1882-1940Description: The commission from Andre Raffalovich for a carving of St. Sebastian in Portland stone was completed in 1920. The measurements of the carving, which is now in the collection of the Tate Gallery, London, are very close to Gill's inscribed details on this drawing (41 x 8 x 10). Three further preparatory drawings are in the collection of the University of Texas at Austin. Gill states, '..the study from which I did the carving was made from myself in a mirror'.
