Gil Scott-Heron is one of the most influential poets and musicians of the 70s and 80s. Widely regarded as the founding father of hip-hop and the godfather of rap, he combined soul, funk and poetry to send an emphatic political message addressing issues ranging from apartheid to urban poverty.
In this extraordinary documentary from filmmaker Don Letts, Scott-Heron tells his own story for the first time, from his childhood, where he was one of the first black children to attend an integrated Southern school, to his emergence as one of the leading political artists of his era. The film also shows Scott-Heron in performance, and reciting poetry on the streets of Harlem.
