Peter Saville is the kind of designer people build legends around. For the past two decades he has been making work that excites us in unique and surprising ways. Most know him through his designs for the record industry, but his new projects extend his wit and style far beyond that arena, with work that few of us have had a chance to see. AIGA NY was happy to have Peter as the first speaker of the 2001-2002 season.

Times Online - Sunday Times : Why is Kurt Cobain’s influence so enduring?
Here we are, then. Ten years after his death, Kurt Cobain still bestrides the modern music world like a colossus. A thin, sickly, whiny, miserable, hunched-over colossus with an unbearable wife and an unsurvivable drug habit, admittedly. But a colossus, nonetheless.

It is not a remarkable note except for one thing. The typeface Tony used to print it is exactly the same typeface Kubrick used for the posters and title sequences of Eyes Wide Shut and 2001. 'It's Futura Extra Bold,' explains Tony. 'It was Stanley's favourite typeface. It's sans serif. He liked Helvetica and Univers, too. Clean and elegant.' 'Is this the kind of thing you and Kubrick used to discuss?' I ask. 'God, yes,' says Tony. 'Sometimes late into the night. I was always trying to persuade him to turn away from them. But he was wedded to his sans serifs.' Tony goes to his bookshelf and brings down a number of volumes full of examples of typefaces, the kind of volumes he and Kubrick used to study, and he shows them to me. 'I did once get him to admit the beauty of Bembo,' he adds, 'a serif.'

PETER SAVILLE GALLERY 1
One thing that is not in dispute is Saville's talent and the impact it has had. No other graphic designer, for example, has had quite the same effect on a city's identity. Alongside Factory Record's Tony Wilson, Saville created a dream world of images, a "Factory Utopia" for Manchester. In some strange way he persuaded other people that Manchester really was this dream place. This included people who lived in the less-than glamorous Manchester of the late 1970s and 1980s when it was still all decaying cotton warehouses and canals full of dumped mattresses.

... ?
Peter Saville Graphic Design - fonts
Peter Saville was born in Manchester England in 1955, he studied, along with his friend Malcolm Garrett, graphic design at Manchester Polytechnic from 1975 to 1978. Garrett's influence on his former schoolmate (they attended St Ambrose College together) was significant. Garrett already by his second year had wrangled his way to designing for the Manchester punk group the Buzzcocks. This fueled Saville's own ambitions and influenced by a stolen library copy of Herbert Spencer's Pioneers of Modern Typography, he found inspiration in the works of Jan Tschichold, the German born book and type designer who was to become the chief propagandist for the New Typography

> Grime!
Grime. Sublow. Dubstep. It's Music. Different people call it different things, depending on when they discovered it. In the 80's, maybe it was House, Techno and Electro. In the 90's it was UK-G, Drum and Bass, Breaks or whatever. Now there are so many terms for it that the journalists can’t pidgeon-hole it any more. This is a good thing - it's music. Moody music. Multifunctional, multifaceted music created by Humans with Brains, Hearts, Machines & Electricity. Music that’s great for dancing to in clubs, or submerging yourself within your headphones, your car, your home, wherever. It's instrumental dance music, but it's the perfect forum for the best MC's and vocalists. We at Rephlex call it Grime to publicise to the people at large, outside of the specialist world of it's producers. The purists might debate the name, but while they do that, crews around the globe are uniting in this strong & fresh dance movement. In this age of Information Technology, people are able to easily find real quality that they actually want, without being spoon-fed compromised product. Now, it is a time of change and the soundtrack Grime.

Guardian Unlimited | Online | Can't stop the music
The downloads, in contrast to the record label's own attempts at doing this, are available in ordinary MP3: no special player needed, and no copy-prevention mechanism built in. Mperia's top man, Joshua Ellis, is not interested in restricting his site's files, despite the industry's common wisdom on online piracy.
He writes: 'The record companies have been making a lot of noise about file-sharing and peer-to-peer software. While we certainly have our own opinions about the whole P2P question, we think it's a red herring. The record labels are afraid of the internet because they can't control it. They can't stop you from selling your work directly to your fans. You don't need them anymore ... and they know it. Peer-to-peer software isn't a cause, it's a symptom. The world is changing.'

I began Experiments in Musical Intelligence in 1981 as the result of a composer's block. My initial idea involved creating a computer program which would have a sense of my overall musical style and the ability to track the ideas of a current work such that at any given point I could request a next note, next measure, next ten measures, and so on. My hope was that this new music would not just be interesting but relevant to my style and to my current work. Having very little information about my style, however, I began creating computer programs which composed complete works in the styles of various classical composers, about which I felt I knew something more concrete

Barbelith: Music: Crass: Still Relevant in 2002?
The rambling house they rented in North Weald, Essex, Rimbaud’s home for thirty years, has recently been purchased to save it – and them – from the profiteering of property developers, and continues to provide a space for communication, the exchange of ideas. A bunch of more genuine people you might be hard pressed to find.

The Psychology Behind Headphones
"On the contrary, I have spent many hours in group settings working on software projects at an educational institution. For one, I just write better code when I have some music to provide a rhythm to code to. For another, it's helpful to have a way to be isolated when working on a very difficult problem, but be able to return to the group setting as easily as taking off my headphones. I _do_ agree that as a culture we have become physically isolationists, but people have been using newspapers on subway commutes since the 1800's as a 'shield' in much the same way. This is not a brand new social apparatus; Just a new instantiation of it."

BarlowFriendz: Depression and The Beauty that Remains
"Fighting clinical depression is inevitably a lonely struggle. What could be less conducive to compassion than a disease that make you whine? Laymen and loved ones tell you to get a grip. They make you feel ashamed to be sick. Even if they're more enlightened about the disease, they can't help but harbor a secret, naturally human, belief that you are suffering a failure of will rather than biochemistry. Meanwhile, the doctors consider little but the neuro-soup and turn you into a shambling medical experiment, testing pharmaceutical nostrums on you that are as blunt as the mind is subtle, though just as unpredictable. But, for you, life just trudges on. It remains, despite whatever visible signs of well-being - wonderful spouse, great kids, well-located house, etc. - a purgatory of uselessness, barren of joy and meaning. Love, incoming or out-going, becomes something you think, not feel."

Professor Sharma said there was growing evidence that specific functions were not controlled exclusively by individual areas of the brain, but by complex networks within the organ.

Minimum - Mini Format -John Pawson 156 x 136 mm, 6 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches, 328 pp plus 4 fold-outs, 145 illustrations reproduced in six colours
This book, designed and compiled by the minimalist architect John Pawson, captures the essential qualities of particular kinds of simplicity. This is illustrated by architecture, ranging from prehistoric Mexico and Ancient Egypt to the high Modernism of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe; art, from the Dutch School to Donald Judd; the photography of Robert Mapplethorpe and Bill Brandt; and furniture and pottery. With its broad spread across time and a wide geographical area, Minimum seeks to analyse the elements of simplicity and capture them in print.

The new science of artificial societies suggests that real ones are both more predictable and more surprising than we thought. Growing long-vanished civilizations and modern-day genocides on computers will probably never enable us to foresee the future in detail but we might learn to anticipate the kinds of events that lie ahead, and where to look for interventions that might work
